Tanzania President Samia Hassan Loses Husband at 77

Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died at the age of 77 while receiving treatment for a heart condition in Zanzibar.

Hassan died early on Monday, September 7, 2026, at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, according to Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi, who announced the death and expressed condolences to the President, her family and the people of Tanzania.

Funeral preparations are reportedly underway in Kizimkazi, southern Zanzibar, the family’s native area.

Hafidh Ameir Hassan became Tanzania’s First Gentleman in 2021 when his wife assumed the presidency following the death of President John Magufuli, making her Tanzania’s first female president. He largely maintained a private life despite his wife’s prominent political position.

Hassan married Samia Suluhu in 1978, and the couple had four children — three sons and a daughter. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, is a member of Tanzania’s Parliament representing a constituency in Zanzibar.

News of his death has prompted condolences from regional leaders. Kenyan President William Ruto described him as President Samia’s “lifelong companion,” a beloved father and a distinguished Tanzanian. Burundi’s President Évariste Ndayishimiye also expressed condolences.

Hassan’s death comes at a politically significant period for Tanzania, with President Samia serving her second term after the disputed 2025 presidential election.

For President Samia, however, the immediate moment is one of personal loss.

The Tanzanian nation now mourns alongside its President as funeral arrangements continue for a man who remained largely away from the political spotlight while supporting his wife throughout her historic rise to the presidency.
