Reps Ask FG To Name, Sanction Terrorism Financiers

The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to publicly identify, sanction and prosecute all individuals and organisations financing terr+rism and banditry, as part of new measures to curb rising insecurity across the country.

The call formed part of the resolutions adopted on Wednesday during a special three-day plenary on national security reform. The session was convened in response to escalating attacks, including recent mass abductions nationwide.

House Leader, Julius Ihonvbere, who presented the summary of recommendations, said the era of concealing terrorism sponsors must end. “It is time we know them, we name them, we prosecute them, and put an end to this question of funding terrorism,” he declared.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session, said the recent terrorism proceedings involving Nnamdi Kanu underscored the need for transparency in all terrorism-related trials. The House therefore recommended the creation of a special court dedicated to terrorism, banditry and kidnapping cases.

Lawmakers also called for a nationwide digital tracking system for all weapons owned by security agencies, alongside a comprehensive audit of government firearms. According to Kalu, many weapons used by criminals are obtained through “backdoor channels,” making strict monitoring essential.

To strengthen security operations, the House further urged the Federal Government to embark on large-scale recruitment into the armed forces and improve the salaries and welfare of security personnel.
