Nigeria Has Everything Needed to Prosper, But Poor Leadership Holds It Back – Femi Adesina

Former presidential spokesman Femi Adesina has blamed poor leadership, corruption, weak infrastructure and rising unemployment for Nigeria’s failure to realise its enormous potential, despite its abundant human and natural resources.

Adesina, who served as Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, made the remarks while delivering a lecture titled “Nigeria’s Kinetics: How Long?” at the maiden annual public lecture organised by the Foursquare Gospel Church, Aba Ibeji. The event was held at Mauve 21 in Oluyole Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Speaking on the country’s development challenges, Adesina said Nigeria possesses all the ingredients needed to become a prosperous nation, including a large youthful population, rich mineral deposits, fertile agricultural land and a strategic geographical location. However, he lamented that these advantages have yet to translate into meaningful economic progress.

“Nigeria is endowed with both human and natural resources but unfortunately it has not translated to wealth,” he said.

According to him, years of poor governance, entrenched corruption, inadequate infrastructure and widespread unemployment have continued to hold the country back, leaving many young Nigerians disillusioned as they struggle to find decent jobs and improve their standard of living.

Adesina also reflected on remarks made by successive Nigerian leaders, from Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa to President Bola Tinubu, noting that almost every administration has spoken optimistically about Nigeria’s immense potential. Despite those assurances, he said, many of the promises have failed to materialise.

He urged the nation’s political leaders to move beyond rhetoric and take practical steps that would enable Nigerians to benefit from the country’s vast resources and opportunities.

Other speakers at the event echoed similar concerns, stressing that national development requires a collective effort. They called on citizens across the country to play their part in building a more prosperous and united Nigeria.
