Controversial Nigerian singer Portable has sparked outrage with comments made during a recent interview on the podcast Echoo Room with Quincy Jonze. Portable suggested that the late Afrobeats pioneer and activist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti passed away early because he “did not mind his business.”

In the interview, which has gone viral on social media, Portable criticized Fela’s dedication to fighting for Nigerians’ rights, claiming that Fela’s activism ultimately cost him his life.

“According to what we were told, if Fela had minded his business a little, he would have lived longer. But he was busy fighting for Nigerians wey no fight for themselves,” Portable remarked, referencing Fela’s opposition to military regimes and social injustice.
